Friends of Ryder Trauma Center is backing various political initiatives. We will provide updates on these initiatives.
This year we are focusing our efforts on child safety. On Sunday September 14, 2008 The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine - William Lehman Injury Research Center at the Ryder Trauma Center held its first 5K run and 1 mile walk "Strides for Safety" in Aventura, Florida to benefit injury prevention research programs. In addition, there were educational activities and programs for children and driving safety. Friends of Ryder Trauma was a sponsor and members volunteered to help raise $25,000 for this inaugural event
Repeal the no helmet law. 20 people died during “Bike Week” in Jacksonville in March of 2006. This is believed to be a nationwide record for a weekly motorcycle event. The only requirement under the laws of the State of Florida for not wearing a helmet is a $10,000 insurance policy. This would not cover the expense of a helicopter ride to a Level 1 Trauma Facility.
Increase education on policies that can reduce Trauma injuries. The most effective and efficient way to help a trauma victim is to prevent them from becoming one in the first place.
